Non-Endemic Brands in Gaming and Esports: How to Get In Without Getting Roasted

A “non-endemic” brand is any brand whose product has nothing to do with gaming: beer, fashion, cars, banks, food delivery, telecoms. For years these brands watched gaming from the outside. Now many of them are inside, because gamers are a huge, young audience that is hard to reach anywhere else and largely tunes out traditional advertising.

The catch is that gaming communities are quick to notice, and quicker to mock, a brand that does not get it. A clumsy entry does not just underperform; it becomes a meme. This guide covers how non-endemic brands get in credibly, with real examples, the rules that keep you out of trouble, and how to measure whether it worked.

Why non-endemic brands are moving in

  • The audience is hard to reach elsewhere. Younger players spend their attention on games, streams and creators, not on TV or display ads.
  • Attention is high. Viewers choose to watch streams and tournaments; they are not skipping past them.
  • The community is a distribution channel. When a brand earns a place in a community, fans carry its message further than paid media would.

What it looks like when it works

Louis Vuitton and League of Legends Worlds (2019). Louis Vuitton designed a one-of-a-kind travel case for the Summoner’s Cup, plus in-game skins and a capsule collection by Nicolas Ghesquière (Riot Games, Forbes). It worked because it added to the game’s biggest moment instead of interrupting it.

BMW #UnitedInRivalry (2020). BMW partnered with five top teams (Cloud9, Fnatic, FunPlus Phoenix, G2 Esports and T1), with branded vehicles, jerseys and a campaign built on rivalry between the teams rather than on the cars (G2 Esports, BMW Group). The brand stayed in the background and let the teams’ fan bases do the talking. OG Esports joined in 2021.

Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes started with ESL in 2017 (Daimler) and later moved to a long-term partnership with Riot Games, extended to 2025 (Esports Insider). The lesson is consistency: a multi-year presence builds the familiarity a one-off stunt never will.

AB InBev’s TheCoolDown (our work). A beer brand is about as non-endemic as it gets. Registrations for TheCoolDown had stalled at 10,000 against a 40,000 target, at around €2.50 per register. We built a performance-only creator giveaway across mature gaming communities (Valorant, CS:GO and Apex Legends) and delivered 38,000 registrations at €0.32 each, an 87.3% lower cost per register (case study). It worked because the audience was age-appropriate, the creators were native to those games, and the reward was something players actually wanted.

The rules that keep you out of the memes

  1. Add something to the experience. In-game items, better viewing experiences, rewards, access. If your activation only interrupts, it will be skipped or mocked.
  2. Find a real fit with player life. Food and drinks during long sessions, gear and comfort, finance for players who buy in-game items. Forced connections get called out.
  3. Let natives speak. Creators, casters and teams who already have the audience’s trust deliver your message better than any brand channel.
  4. Respect the audience’s intelligence. Do not use slang you do not understand or reference games your team has never played. Hire or partner with people who live in the culture.
  5. Get compliance right. For age-restricted categories like alcohol or gambling, pick titles and communities with an adult audience, and follow platform rules. Our ad policy map covers the restricted verticals.
  6. Commit for longer than a campaign. Communities reward brands that stay. A season-long presence beats a single splashy weekend.

For most non-endemic brands the smartest order is: start measurable, then scale visible. Prove the audience converts with creators and giveaways, then add a team or tournament partnership on top, with a trackable layer attached to every logo. Our guide to esports sponsorship costs and ROI has the price ranges.

What backfires

  • Logo-slapping. A logo on a jersey with no activation behind it is a donation, and fans know it.
  • Cringe copy. Forced gamer slang, outdated memes or wrong game references spread fast for the wrong reasons.
  • One-off stunts. A weekend activation and then silence reads as opportunism.
  • Ignoring the platform rules. A creator who gets demonetized for your sponsorship will not work with you again.

How to measure it

Non-endemic brands usually need two kinds of proof: brand impact and business impact.

  • Brand impact: sponsor recall, brand lift studies, sentiment in community channels and branded search lift during and after activations.
  • Business impact: registrations, sales or app installs from tracked creator links and codes, with cost per result compared to your other channels.

Run both from day one. The brand metrics justify the presence; the performance layer proves the audience is worth it. For the full framework, see how to measure ROI in esports and gaming campaigns.

A 90-day entry plan

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: map the audience. Which games, platforms and communities match your target customer, age and region.
  2. Weeks 3 to 6: test with creators. A small set of native, mid-tier creators with tracked links and a clear offer.
  3. Weeks 7 to 10: scale what works. Double down on the best creators and formats; add a community or giveaway layer.
  4. Weeks 11 to 13: decide on visibility. With proof in hand, evaluate a team or tournament partnership, priced against the results you already have.
